HOW TO FEEL INSTANTLY MORE GROUNDED WHEN YOU NEED TO GET OUT OF YOUR OWN HEAD SO THAT YOU CAN STOP WORRYING ABOUT EVERYTHING AND LIVE MORE IN THE MOMENT.
That little voice in your head can make you feel crazy, right?
Whether you’re lying in bed trying to sleep and your mind is racing, or you’re stuck in traffic and your brain is, um, upset or, your little voice chatters away in your head, incessantly, sometimes that little voice in your head feels out. of. control.
It may be comforting to know, we all experience this.
Eckhart Tolle tells a story about a realization he had in college about the voice in his head. He rode the train to class every day and there was always a woman who talked to herself with an angry voice.
One day he got off the train directly behind her, followed her all the way to the very same building where he was going on campus, and thought to himself, how does someone who is clearly insane apparently have a job at this university?
Still preoccupied with thinking about her, he goes to the bathroom to wash his hands. His mind is swirling with questions and confusion about this woman before landing on the thought, “I hope I don’t end up like her.”
Another man, who is also washing his hands, looks over and Eckhart is shocked to find that he’d just said those words out loud, “I hope I don’t end up like her.”
At that moment, he realized his mind was as active as this woman’s who he assumed was mentally ill. And, even though he didn’t verbalize it out loud, he realized that sometimes his busy brain made him feel that crazy.
It’s no wonder. This inner speech, or verbal thinking, happens at an average pace of 4,000 words per minute—10 times faster than verbal speech—and can create a self-perpetuating cycle that causes stress and struggling and can be hard to stop.
But yoga therapy offers a simple way to shift out of your head so that you can be more present in the moment with ease.
You’re probably familiar with the system of your body that is energetic. It’s the life force system called Prana, Chi, Ki, etc. that is used in yoga, acupuncture, Reiki and many other Eastern traditions.
To keep it super simple, let’s just call it energy, ok?
Ideally, this energy is evenly balanced throughout your body but when your mind is racing and that little voice is out of control, it means there’s an imbalance.
Simply put, there’s too much energy up in your head.
The remedy to this imbalance is to shift energy down, out of your head so that balanced is restored and you can feel more grounded and present in your whole body.
The simplest, most effective way to do this is to pay attention, on purpose, to your feet on the floor, your seat in the chair, your back on the bed, or whatever part of your body is touching whatever is underneath you.
Essentially this is just cultivating the opposite to the excessive upward energy by focusing on and therefore shifting energy downward.
It really is that simple, try it right now.
Whether you’re standing, sitting, or lying down:
- Notice the part(s) of your body that touches the floor, chair, bed, or whatever is underneath you.
- Exhale and feel yourself relaxing into whatever is under you, right where you’re touching it.
- Focus your attention on the downward sensation(s) of your body and whatever is under your body, coming together.
The more you focus your attention downward, the more your energy will shift down out of your head.
The more grounded you will feel.
The more present you will be.
