In fact, it was a small change I made many years ago that not only made a big difference with something I was struggling, but that lead me to discover yoga therapy and change the trajectory of my life.
Here’s the story. In my late teens and 20s, mounting stress-related anxiety initiated the body-focused repetitive behavior of pulling on my eyebrows and eyelashes.
It was a coping mechanism that I struggled with for years but it wasn’t until I had pulled all of my eyebrows and eyelashes out, I acknowledged the need to make a change.
The small change was bending over, taking a few slow breaths, and talking to myself.
Now, this may sound nuts, but what I came to understand years later is forward bending is an introspective posture, slow breathing calms the nervous system, and repeating an inner dialog alters the brain to create a new way of being.
This small, simple change made a direct, big change in my life.
I began to see how some of my inner patterns influenced my life in a way that I didn’t want.
I recognized how I could reclaim my brain and body from stressed to calm and focus my thoughts on the shift I wanted to make.
I not only was able to stop pulling on my eyebrows and eyelashes, but this practice helped me reclaim my life.
And I still use this simple method to continually live with more intention.
